Where BPC-157 comes from
Researchers first picked BPC-157 out as a small fragment of a bigger protein in human gastric juice. The vials sold today are built in a lab rather than taken from anyone's stomach.
Most of its studies are injury studies. Tendons, muscle, bone and the gut are where the experiments have gone, and almost always in rats. Searching PubMed for these notes found 231 records that name it, and 175 of those shared a single lead author from a team in Zagreb. The BPC-157 evidence, study by study
The widest view comes from a 2025 systematic review. It pulled together 36 studies on injuries to muscle, tendon and bone: 35 were animal or lab work, and only 1 was a clinical study. That ratio, 35 to 1, is the clearest summary of this peptide's record.
In 2008, a rat experiment severed the Achilles tendon where it meets the bone, then followed the animals for four days: how they walked, how much they swelled and how many fresh blood vessels formed. The rats were split between BPC-157, a steroid and plain salt water.
Cell work adds one more angle. A 2014 dish study used rat tendon cells and counted the growth hormone receptors on them after BPC-157, then measured how the cells multiplied once growth hormone was added.
