The early work came in 2006: in a crossover study, 18 women before menopause who had low arousal each had both bremelanotide and a placebo, and described their desire on each.
Then came two large phase 3 trials. A 2022 analysis pooled both, covering 1,202 premenopausal women whose sexual desire was low, over 24 weeks, and compared desire and distress scores on bremelanotide and on placebo across age and weight groups.
A 2024 review of the same phase 3 data questioned how change was measured and criticized some of the scoring tools. Both belong side by side: the trials and the doubts about them.
